In 1906, ChiNan Academy, the predecessor of Jinan University, was founded in Nanjing with the approval of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty. The school was set up to provide education in Chinese culture and moral values to overseas Chinese. The name ChiNan (and the current spelling Jinan) came from the Confucian classic Book of History, which reads: ‘reaching eastward to the North and South, we shall spread the culture far and wide.’
Jinan University (JNU) has continued to spread this unique mark of Chinese culture for more than 100 years now. In its 115-year history, the University has operated in several cities. ChiNan Academy moved from Nanjing to Shanghai in 1923, and in 1927 it was renamed ChiNan National University. The school was relocated to Fujian during the Anti-Japanese War and then yet again to Shanghai in 1946. Then, in August 1949, the University merged with Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1958, the university was rebuilt, this time at its current home in Guangzhou.
JNU has been adhering to its mission of “spreading the culture far and wide” and the talent development philosophy of “combining knowledge with practice to serve the country”, and forging a schooling tradition of “focusing on the basic and emphasizing application and innovation” and the spirit of “honesty, integrity, knowledge-practice integration, persistence, and harmony out of diversity”. It has delivered a great number of quality talents to the country and beyond, hence acclaimed as “the top higher-education institution for overseas Chinese” and “the talent cradle for overseas students”.
There are many special features that Jinan University can be proud of:
- Under Project 211 and Double First-Class Initiative
- The 1st university in China that recruits foreign students
- The university with the largest number of overseas students
- The only university that finds her alumni in both Chinese and foreign state-level leaders in China
School of Management, Jinan University
Jinan University had business discipline in its inception. As early as 1918, Mr. Huang Yanpei, the First Vice Premier of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, keenly observed that the nature of economic competition among countries is the competition of education, and helped to bring about the establishment of the business discipline within Jinan.
Since then, for nearly a century, business discipline has been always an advantageous discipline and makes JNU proud. The milestones include:
- In 1925, the father of Chinese modern accounting Professor Pan Xulun founded the Jinan’s Department of Accounting;
- In 1978, the first course of marketing management in mainland China was launched;
- In 1986, the industrial economics doctoral degree was granted and became the first doctoral Programme of applied economics in South China.
- In 1998, the university integrated the resources of such subjects as industrial and business administration, public administration, and managerial science and engineering to establish the School of Management formally.
The School covers the Department of Accounting, Department of Business Administration, Department of Marketing, and Department of Tourism Management as well as a number of research institutes. By March 2016, 134 full-time faculty members work in the School including 52 professors and 57 associate professors. The School has established two first-level disciplines for doctoral degrees (Business Administration & Management Science and Engineering) and one first-level discipline for master’s degree (Psychology). Totally, there are 4,741 students studying in the School including 2,446 undergraduates, 267 doctoral students (including DBA), 469 academic master students (MSc), 907 MBA/EMBA students, and 652 other specialized professional master students.
JNU had been accredited by AMBA in the year 2011, which was one of the first 5 universities in mainland China to be awarded AMBA accreditation. In July 2013, JNU was re-accredited by AMBA for her outstanding performance in MBA/EMBA education programs. In 2016, JNU was re-accredited by AMBA for a 5-year length of accreditation. In 2021, JNU was accredited jointly by AMBA and BGA. In 2022, JNU obtained the AACSB accreditation for a period of 5 years.
